A lot goes on at our St. Stephen Outreach Center. Our “Playing in the Park” program engages children in homework help, learning and enrichment activities, and physical activity five days a week during the school year. “Family Movie Nights” and community festivals such as the “Pesto Festival” and “Trunk or Treat” are held throughout the year. In summer, a raised-bed community garden is available to the neighborhood. A Community Thanksgiving meal is staffed by volunteers and underwritten in part by a Thrivent Action Team. Volunteers with a wide variety of skills and interests are needed to continue to enhance these activities.
Playing in the Park
This after school program operates four days a week during September to April. and with the help of 14 regular volunteers, 4 youth volunteers, members, Lehigh Carbon Community College students, Central Catholic youth volunteers, and one teacher from McKinley Elementary. Thanks to the combined efforts of many volunteers, notably those from our partners like HOPE Lutheran Church we are able to provide over 30 children with homework help, reading and math practice, and plenty of extra-curricular activities, outdoor sports and just plain fun!

In addition, dedicated time is provided each day to complete homework. The children learn to use our library book nook with the guidance of adults who help the children with sight word identification, vocabulary, and sentence structure. The children write personal thank you notes to those from the outside community who have visited the outreach center through special programs. We encourage the children to make cards for the homebound members of Christ Church for various holidays. Above all self-esteem. respect of others and the property of others, responsibility for ones actions, and neighborhood pride are taught and encouraged.
Community Garden is a series of raised beds in the Franklin Park Playground and are tended by volunteers from various community groups. The bounty from the garden is shared with the community at events like the Pesto Festival and the Summer Water Ice Festival.
