Good News for McKinley — Thank You!

There is a lot of good news coming out of McKinley Elementary School these days.  You have probably read in the Morning Call that a new building is in the works that will replace McKinley School on Turner Ave. and Cleveland School on N. 9th Street.  As plans develop for this fantastic new building, our ministry with the students and families in our neighborhood continues.

Children’s success in school is linked to parent involvement in education–reduced absenteeism, reduced tardiness, readiness for Kindergarten, English Language skills–all have a big impact on a child’s success in school.  thanks to some new tracking and motivation methods in place at McKinley, new statistics point to our involvement with the children as having a positive affect on their performance in the classroom.

“Sometimes the greatest gift we can give a child is the notion that someone else cares.”

R2D2 Afterschool Literacy Program for children in First and Second Grad helps students gain confidence in reading and language skills. This year, 16 eager children arrive each Wednesday afternoon for tutoring. We have loads of fun reading and doing activities and games. We share a snack before returning to school for parent  pick up.

Book Blast (a Saturday morning family reading activity at Christ Church) attendance is improved thanks in past to our ability to help fund the program with Thrivent Action Team benefits.

If you are a Thrivent member and would be interested in using your Action Team benefit to help support any of these Book Blasts (members are eligible to apply twice each year), please contact Linda Maxon or visit for more information and to apply.  The application process needs to be completed 21 days before you wish to support.
