The Leader in Me
Great Happens here
The Allentown Community Leadership Academy is our signature summer learning and leadership program with McKinley School and our neighborhood. This program runs between July 8 through August 2 and will serve 80 children and employs seven ASD teachers and 10 student assistants from places like Building 21, Muhlenberg College and LCCC.
Here are some ways you can get involved:
- Volunteer to serve breakfast or lunch to the students. This is a great way to see what is going on and to meet the students and teachers. We have a great kitchen crew lead by Barbara Wentling, but they can always use extra help especially on Thursdays when lunches are packed for field trips on Friday.
- Pray: For the students that these four weeks will be valuable learning experience for all.
For the families of our students that they will support their child’s learning.
For God’s loving protection for all of our students, staff and volunteers.
- Apply for your Thrivent Action Team Benefit to support the Friday Field Trips.
- Make a gift and become one of the sponsors of this important ministry to the children of our neighborhood.
This program works because of the wide variety of learning and enrichment activities we are able to provide. Our students actually want to attend, learn and play together each day! Monday-Thursday students attend three classes in the mornings: Reading, Math and Leadership. Afternoons are full of enrichment experiences. Physical activity and healthy lifestyles are encouraged. Fridays are for field trips. This year we will be visiting Wheels of Time and splashing in the water features at Bucky Boyle; exploring the Lehigh Valley Zoo and the Fjord; attending Robin Hood and Maid Marian at DeSales University and having a field day on the green.
Christ Lutheran Church has been named a United Way Partner Agency as a result of this program and the student outcomes we have been able to demonstrate. Our goal is to eliminate summer learning loss and provide children with the skills needed to be a leader and take responsibility for their own actions. We are also able to provide children with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) activities. Funding and volunteer commitments already in place for this year include: The United Way, PPL, Lee and Dolly Butz, The Junior League of the Greater Lehigh Valley, Nativity Lutheran Church, Redeemer Lutheran Church, St. Timothy Lutheran Church, a gift from Lynn Ritter in memory of John Ritter, and contributions of many individuals.
It takes partners, staff and volunteers–all of us working together to demonstrate the importance of literacy and leadership in the lives of children. We can and we will change our community for the better.
ALCA builds community leadership skills, prevents summer learning loss, explores emerging talents and encourages healthy lifestyles.
